Sanctuary, located in Oxford, is a bar and lounge with a twist: a themed vampiric experience in a Gothic cathedral. Sanctuary includes musical numbers, theatrical actions, costumed staff and actors, and themed drinks and food.
Created with Caroline Davis, we applied our developed typefaces (Davis, Rossomondi; Lee, Acquedotti), and our shared interests to create something so taboo yet so desirable.
BRAND STORY
Viktor Kaine lived his entire life in England. Throughout Kaine’s life, he has had a strong interest in the Gothic aesthetic and especially the literature (his favorite being Dracula). Growing up, Viktor was bullied for his active imagination. He did not make many friends and felt extremely excluded, finding connections to himself with the monsters he had read about in literature.
He wished for an opportunity to create some sort of sanctuary where everyone could be accepted, and his imagination could run wild. In an unexpected turn of events, Viktor inherited an abandoned Victorian cathedral in the heart of Oxford. It was located near one of the most vibrant and diverse neighborhoods.
With this inheritance, Viktor knew exactly what he wanted to do with it. He decided to create a themed lounge, specifically a vampiric cathedral lounge. It would be complete with musical numbers, theatrical actions, and costumed staff and actors.
Every themed lounge needs an origin story, and Sanctuary was no different. Viktor created the persona of Viktor Ravyn Blackthorn, a Victorian vampire who, throughout the decades, has wanted to make human connections and friendships. To achieve this, he would make his own sanctuary where he would be accepted among others.

BRAND IDENTITIY
Using a limited color palette, a mysterious, bold, and powerful palette was created. The type used for the wordmark is Acquedotti’s special characters that were altered to give a vampiric and sharp feeling, evoking interest and mystery. Using Caroline’s Rossomandi as headers, and DIN Condensed as body copy. We also included the regular Acquedotti as special headers.
INTERIOR
The experience inside of Sanctuary should feel freeing, avoidant of limitations. However, from an outsiders pov, it should feel enticing and mysterious. It should have a feeling that you had to be there.
SPECIALTY DRINKS
BELA LUGOSI
A brooding blend of black rum, cherry liqueur, espresso, and a dash of absinthe. Finished with a blood red cherry and a hint of smoke. Best sipped in the shadows.

Velvety cognac, stirred with elderflower, amaro, and a hint of vanilla bitters.
Refined and timeless. A drink that never dies.

FIRST KILL
Pomegranate vodka, cranberry, and lemon juice over ice, laced with a swirl of grenadine. Tart, seductive, and slightly dangerous.
